Critical Thinking and the Future of Reading

Over the years on this blog, we have addressed the critical need for critical thinking at all ages and levels of education, as well as the fact that while humans are hard-wired for speech, we are not hard-wired for reading and writing, which must be taught and learned. This past Saturday, the U.S. edition of The Guardian addressed both these points in their article “Skim reading is the new normal: The effect on society is profound” by Maryanne Wolf, a writer and brain researcher. Rather than try to summarize Wolf’s numerous important points, we suggest that you read the entire article here and then leave us your thoughts and opinions about the subject in the comments section below. We look forward to a lively discussion about this important topic.
