Back-to-School Eye Exams

If your child can’t see the blackboard well, it can affect both their behavior and their academic performance. That makes early detection of vision problems critical.

Doctors recommend that every child four years and older receive a full vision check before they start the new school year. For kids who have a family history of eye conditions, including amblyopia (lazy eye), crossed eyes, or even nearsightedness, they should have eye exams as early as when they’re a year old.

Some of the signs of vision problems are subtle, and include holding screens too close, sitting too near the television, reading slowly, or changing behavior in the classroom. Left untreated, vision problems can affect a child’s ability to read, comprehend, or behave in an appropriate manner. Even if they passed a vision test last year, they should have an exam before the upcoming school year, as changes can occur quickly.

Getting a pair of glasses can literally change a child’s life. When they show up to class with the glasses the next day, they can see and function well, which improves both their academic performance and their behavior. It sets them up to succeed.

Getting an eye exam is even more important because there’s been a global spike in nearsightedness, which can be linked to increased screen time and a lack of outdoor play, where distance vision is important.

Want to get your child school-ready? Make an appointment with your optometrist to have your child’s vision checked. It’s an easy way to help ensure a successful year.
